Sergio Garcia Leaves LIV Golf for the DP World Tour and Sets His Sights on the 2027 Ryder Cup
By The Arena Staff
Sergio Garcia is going back to where his career started, and he wants another shot at the Ryder Cup, the event where he has scored more points than anyone.
The 46-year-old Spaniard said Thursday that he will play the DP World Tour in 2027, ending a run with LIV Golf that began in June 2022. "This tour has been a huge part of my career from the very beginning, and I'm proud to call it home again," Garcia said in a statement on social media. "I'm also keeping my options open for a return to the PGA Tour."
The announcement makes official an exit that was already in motion. Garcia's attorney asked a federal bankruptcy judge a month ago to terminate his LIV contract, Golf Channel reported, after the league filed for Chapter 11 protection on Sept. 8. LIV lost the backing of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund in April and is trying to continue as a rebranded "LIV 2.0," with only a handful of players committed so far for 2027, according to BBC Sport. Garcia joins Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell among the notable names who have announced they are leaving.
Garcia won twice on LIV while captaining Fireballs GC. His bigger résumé was built before that. BBC Sport counts 27 titles on the American and European circuits between 1999 and 2020, including the 2017 Masters, and Sky Sports puts his PGA Tour total at 11. He has played in 10 Ryder Cups and holds the event's career points record with 28.5, Golf Channel reported, though he has not played for Europe since 2021.
That is where his statement turned personal. "Another goal is to make that Ryder Cup team, and to be an asset to the guys in whatever capacity that may be," he said, with Luke Donald's European team headed to Adare Manor in Ireland next year. BBC Sport noted that under current tour rules Garcia is eligible to play again but cannot serve as a future captain or vice-captain.
The road back to the PGA Tour is less clear. Sky Sports reported that the tour's 12-month suspension for LIV players means Garcia would have to wait until August 2027 to return. He will need form, too: Golf Channel listed him at No. 146 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Garcia also addressed his last trip to Augusta National, where he damaged a tee box and broke his driver during the final round of the Masters in April, Golf Channel and BBC Sport reported. "I left Augusta last year disappointed with myself and my actions, and I'm ready to show what I've learned and where I am mentally," he said, adding that he planned to put "a big focus on a strong mindset and my mental health."
