McDavid Sets NHL Record With 13-Game Season-Opening Assist Streak as Oilers Blank Flames
By The Arena Staff
EDMONTON, Alberta, Oct. 28, 2026 — Connor McDavid has not gone a game this season without setting up a goal, and now nobody in NHL history has started a season that way for longer.
McDavid had two assists Wednesday night, pushing his season-opening assist streak to 13 games, an NHL record, as the Edmonton Oilers shut out the Calgary Flames 4-0 at Rogers Place. He passed the 12-game mark shared by Sebastian Aho (2018-19), Ken Linseman (1985-86) and Wayne Gretzky (1982-83), according to NHL.com. The Oilers captain also has a point in all 13 games and leads the league with 36 points on eight goals and 28 assists.
The record helper came early. Mathieu Joseph scored on Edmonton's first shot of the game at 7:46 of the first period, finishing a McDavid pass from the right dot across the slot by tucking it under Devin Cooley's right arm.
"We wanted to win the game, that was first and foremost," McDavid said, per NHL.com. "Calgary had been playing really, really well and scoring lots of goals. We had to defend hard and find a way to get a win."
The night turned on a collision in the Calgary crease. With 12 seconds left in the first period, Oilers forward Colton Dach crashed into Cooley, who had started all four games of the Flames' winning streak. Cooley left with a lower-body injury, Dach was called for goaltender interference, and Dustin Wolf took over to start the second.
Mattias Ekholm, back after missing two games with a concussion, made it 2-0 at 4:52 of the second with a shot from the point that went in off the crossbar. Early in the third, Edmonton put it away in a 21-second burst. Kasperi Kapanen took McDavid's pass across the crease and lifted a power-play goal over Wolf's left pad, and Alex Formenton followed by beating Wolf's glove from the slot after Jason Dickinson stripped Jake Middleton along the boards.
Tristan Jarry made 24 saves for his first shutout of the season and the 24th of his career. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added two assists. Wolf stopped 20 of 23 shots in relief.
Edmonton (9-2-2) had lost two straight for the first time this season. Calgary (5-7-0) came in having won four in a row and five of six.
McDavid's two assists also gave him 25 for the month, NHL.com noted, his second 25-assist month after February 2024. Only Gretzky and Mario Lemieux had done it more than once.
The Oilers visit the New York Islanders on Saturday.
