Rays Rally in the 12th, Walk Off Brewers to Stay Alive in the World Series
By The Arena Staff
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 27, 2026 — The Milwaukee Brewers were three outs from the first World Series title in franchise history. The Tampa Bay Rays never let them get one.
Ben Williamson's pinch-hit single to right field scored pinch-runner Nick Fortes in the bottom of the 12th inning, and the Rays beat the Brewers 4-3 on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field to avoid a sweep. Milwaukee leads the series 3-1, with Game 5 set for Wednesday night in St. Petersburg.
Cooper Pratt had put the Brewers ahead in the top of the 12th with a home run to left-center off Ian Seymour, his fourth hit of the night. Tampa Bay answered without making an out. Junior Caminero reached on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz, and Liam Hicks singled him to third. Jonny DeLuca then singled to center off Shane Drohan, scoring pinch-runner Cedric Mullins to tie it. Chandler Simpson singled to load the bases, and Williamson sent a ground ball through to right for the winner, according to MLB.com and Sportsnet.
MLB.com put the finish in rare company: the Rays became the 17th team to win a World Series game on a walk-off while facing elimination, and the first since David Freese and the 2011 Cardinals. Sportsnet noted that only five teams in 26 tries have avoided a sweep after falling behind 3-0 in the World Series.
The score had been 2-2 since the fifth inning. Simpson's RBI double in the second scored DeLuca, Pratt doubled in Sal Frelick to tie it in the fourth, and Caminero scored in the bottom half when Brewers third baseman David Hamilton threw the ball away on a fielder's choice. Hamilton made up for it with a solo homer off Jax to open the fifth.
Rays starter Griffin Jax allowed two runs in four innings, and Tampa Bay's bullpen, including Game 1 starter Nick Martinez, followed with seven scoreless innings before the 12th. Milwaukee's relievers matched them for most of the night. Aaron Ashby allowed no hits or walks over 2 1/3 innings, according to the official box score.
The Brewers will try again to close it out Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. Sportsnet reported that Jacob Misiorowski is set to start for Milwaukee, while Rays manager Kevin Cash said after the 4-hour, 20-minute marathon that Tampa Bay's plan had not been decided.
