Brewers Take World Series Game 1 After Replay Wipes Out Their Celebration
By The Arena Staff
MILWAUKEE, Oct. 23, 2026 — The Milwaukee Brewers celebrated a World Series win twice on Friday night. Only the second one counted.
Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to finish off a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series, the AP and MLB.com reported. The final out came minutes after an apparent game-ending double play was overturned on replay review.
It was Milwaukee's first World Series game since 1982, and the Brewers now lead the series 1-0.
## The Double Play That Wasn't
Tampa Bay trailed 3-1 when it rallied against Megill in the ninth.
Jonathan Aranda and Chandler Simpson hit back-to-back one-out singles. A double steal by pinch-runner Jorge Mateo and Simpson put the tying run in scoring position, and Junior Caminero walked on a full-count pitch in the dirt to load the bases, the AP reported.
Liam Hicks then hit a grounder to the right side. Second baseman Brice Turang ranged to his left, fielded it and threw to shortstop Cooper Pratt to start what was first ruled a game-ending double play. MLB.com said it set off "a momentary celebration."
Replay showed Pratt's right foot was slightly off the bag when he reached for Turang's high throw, according to the AP. Hicks was still out at first, but the out at second was wiped away. A run scored, and the Rays had the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second.
Megill then struck out DeLuca swinging for the real final out.
## How Milwaukee Got There
The Brewers scored twice in the first inning off Rays starter Nick Martinez. Jackson Chourio led off with a single, and one out later Christian Yelich lined an RBI triple to center that DeLuca just missed on a diving try, both outlets reported. William Contreras followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The triple came in Yelich's first career World Series plate appearance. He became the seventh player to triple in his first World Series plate appearance and the first since Kansas City's Lynn Jones in 1985, according to the Elias Sports Bureau via the AP.
Tampa Bay got a run back in the fourth. Caminero lined a 112.7 mph double over center fielder Garrett Mitchell's head, and Aranda scored on a Hicks groundout, MLB.com reported.
Contreras then stopped two Rays rallies with his arm. He threw out Victor Mesa Jr. trying to steal third to end the fifth, and he caught Aranda stealing second in the sixth on a strikeout-throw-out double play, according to MLB.com.
Chourio added an insurance run in the seventh with a two-out single off reliever Kevin Kelly that scored Pratt, the AP reported. That run turned out to be the difference.
## Misiorowski's Record Pitch
Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski opened the game with a 103.5 mph fastball to Yandy Díaz, the fastest pitch ever thrown in a World Series game in the pitch-tracking era, according to MLB.com and the AP. It was called a ball.
Misiorowski went on to allow one run over five innings for the win. MLB.com had him at four hits, a walk and three strikeouts, and it was his first time completing five innings this postseason.
## What's Next
Game 2 is Saturday night in Milwaukee. The Rays held Drew Rasmussen back for that start, according to MLB.com.
This is the first World Series since 1980 in which either team would be a first-time champion, the AP reported. The Game 1 winner has gone on to win the Fall Classic about 63% of the time, according to the AP and MLB.com.
