A Kansas City Labrador Put Eight Clothespins on a Washing Line in One Minute, a World Record

She had to open each spring-loaded peg with her mouth first. Eight in a minute was enough.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 8, 2026 — Most dogs would rather steal the laundry than hang it. Java, a 5-year-old black Labrador, clipped eight clothespins onto a washing line in one minute and earned a Guinness World Record for the trouble.

Java and her trainer, Lisa Rickards, made the attempt on March 21 in Kansas City, UPI reported. Guinness World Records certified it as the most clothes pegs put on a washing line by a dog in one minute.

The hard part was not carrying the pins. Java had to pick up each spring-loaded peg, open it with her mouth and clip it onto the line, Guinness World Records said. Eight of those in 60 seconds was enough to take the title.

Java first came into Rickards' life as a trainee service dog for Canine Companions. Rickards spent the first 18 months raising and socializing her for that work. Java went on to advanced training, was ruled not a good fit and came back to Rickards as a pet. The two shifted into canine sports and tricks.

"I joke that Java is fully caffeinated and absolutely lives up to her name," Rickards told Guinness, according to UPI. "She has an enormous amount of enthusiasm for life and, more importantly, she genuinely loves learning. She is especially good at what I think of as 'social learning' — watching another dog or person do something and then figuring out how to do it herself."
