All nine people aboard a Learjet are killed after it crashes onto a busy road in Palm Beach County, Florida

A Learjet 60 flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas nose-dived near a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County on Sunday, killing all nine people on board, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. Officials reported no injuries on the ground, and the NTSB is investigating.

A business jet carrying nine people plunged into a South Florida neighborhood on Sunday afternoon and exploded near a busy road, killing everyone on board, The Associated Press reported, citing Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

The Learjet 60 had left Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it went down near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County at about 12:50 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said, according to NBC News. Duffy called it a "horrific tragedy" in a social media post. The names of the people on board have not been released.

Video of the aftermath showed a crater in the middle of the road engulfed in flames, NBC reported. Gov. Ron DeSantis described the crash as "cataclysmic" and said it "looked like a missile going down." He said the crash spewed a large amount of debris, but there were no reports of anyone on the ground being hurt.

The crash happened on Military Trail, a six-lane road lined with businesses and restaurants, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said, according to the BBC. Officials said about 600 residents of a nearby mobile home community were evacuated.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation with help from the FAA. The cause of the crash has not been determined.
