Police Found Three Escaped Alpacas Wandering a Maine Road. Then They Had to Find Who Owned Them.
Officers found them on Scottow Hill Road, then had to figure out who they belonged to.
SCARBOROUGH, Maine, Nov. 6, 2026 — Scarborough police were out on a normal Monday patrol when the suspects turned out to have long necks and very little interest in answering questions.
Officers found three alpacas wandering Scottow Hill Road near Two Rod Road, the department said. UPI reported that the animals were loose and that police managed to wrangle them, sharing a photo of the trio being led down the street behind a patrol vehicle.
At first, nobody knew whose alpacas they were. The department put the word out and asked for help identifying the owners, NEWS CENTER Maine reported. By about 10:15 a.m., the animals were back home.
Police thanked residents who helped spread the word. The alpacas, for their part, appear to have treated the whole thing as an unscheduled morning walk.
