A Tennessee Sheriff's Office Has Caught Buffalo, a Kangaroo and Emus. Now It's Looking for a Mystery Monkey.

A dog refused to come inside. The reason was a small brown monkey.

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn., Nov. 5, 2026 — The first sign of trouble was a dog that would not come back inside. The reason, its owner told deputies, was a small brown monkey running across the field.

The Crockett County Sheriff's Office got the call Monday from the Brim's Corner area, near Highways 188, 88 and 54 South in rural West Tennessee, and put out an alert asking for help finding the animal and whoever it belongs to, UPI reported.

The department sounded more tired than alarmed. "At this point, we're running out of surprised faces," the alert said. "Over the years, Crockett County deputies have rounded up buffalo, a kangaroo, dogs, turtles, cats, chickens, goats, emus, and more horses and cows than we can count. We thought we had seen it all. Apparently not."

The obvious suspect had an alibi. Deputies checked with the Tennessee Safari Park in nearby Alamo, which said all of its animals were accounted for, WMC Action News 5 reported. Nobody has said what kind of monkey it is or where it came from.

The sheriff's office asked people not to chase it, feed it or take it home, with one exception. "Unless it's yours," the alert said, "then by all means." Anyone who spots the monkey is asked to keep pets and kids away and call the sheriff's office at 731-696-2104.

As of Thursday, there was no word that the monkey had been found.
