Two Cows Escaped in Marshfield. Police Called a Cowboy With a Horse and a Lasso.
A cattle dog did not work. Police asked a cowboy with a horse and lasso to come from hours away.
MARSHFIELD, Mass., Nov. 7, 2026 — When the cattle dog failed, Marshfield police did what any South Shore department would do. They called a cowboy.
Two large black cows escaped a property near Ferry Street and Main Street and spent more than a day on the loose, the Boston Globe reported. Officers tried to secure them Thursday, but every approach sent the animals into dense woods where the terrain made a catch impossible, Sgt. Liam Rooney said.
A man with a cattle dog came out to help and still came up empty. By Friday, police were working with a cowboy bringing a horse and a lasso from "a couple hours away," Rooney told the Globe. One cow briefly returned home Thursday night, then bolted again in the morning. Its owner was still trying to figure out where the livestock were slipping the fence.
UPI reported that town officials had identified the owner and that drivers were warned to stay cautious while at least one cow remained at large. Rooney said both animals are black, which makes them hard to see after dark on Route 3A.
Facebook, as expected, treated the whole thing like a steakhouse open mic. One local commenter called it a "high steaks incident" and asked neighbors to hold off on the ribbing.
