Trump names Stephen Miller White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles
Miller, the deputy chief of staff, will take over Monday. Wiles is moving to the Trump Political Operation after Democrats won control of Congress in Tuesday's midterms.
WASHINGTON (Nov. 6) — President Donald Trump named Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff on Friday, replacing Susie Wiles three days after Democrats won control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections.
Trump announced the change in a Truth Social post, saying Miller, his deputy chief of staff, would take over starting Monday, CNBC reported. Wiles "will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation," Trump wrote, praising her as having done "an outstanding job."
Asked about the move as he left the White House for an event in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Trump told reporters, "I wanted to make a change," according to CNBC. "I think Susie's done a very good job, great job. But I just wanted to make it," he said. "Sometimes in life you have to make moves."
Wiles submitted her resignation Thursday night, a White House official told NBC News. In a post on X Friday, she said it was her last day as chief of staff and called serving Trump "the honor of a lifetime," CNBC and NBC reported.
Miller, a longtime Trump adviser who has helped shape the administration's immigration agenda, said on X that it had been "the privilege of my lifetime" to serve on Trump's team and that he was "honored beyond words" to become chief of staff. "The mission now is more clear than ever: Fight with all of our soul to support our President and defend this magnificent Republic," he wrote, according to CNBC.
The White House posted a formal announcement naming Miller the 33rd White House chief of staff. Vice President JD Vance and several Cabinet officials publicly congratulated him, the release said.
Democratic leaders criticized the pick. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who could become speaker next year, called for Miller to be fired, NBC and CNBC reported. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Trump "learned nothing from his historic defeat" and that Democratic majorities would "fight him every step of the way," according to the same outlets.
The Associated Press said the appointment installs as Trump's closest adviser a longtime loyalist as the president prepares to face a newly empowered Democratic Congress for the final two years of his term.
