FBI searches Beverly Hills mansion in investigation of former Rep. Eric Swalwell

Federal agents served a sealed search warrant Tuesday at the Beverly Hills home of billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, a onetime backer of Swalwell's run for governor, in connection with an investigation into the former congressman. Swalwell has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Oct. 28) — Federal agents served a search warrant Tuesday morning at the Beverly Hills mansion of billionaire businessman Stephen Cloobeck in connection with an investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell, two law enforcement sources told NBC News.

An FBI spokesperson confirmed that agents were executing a search warrant that remains under seal, NBC Los Angeles reported. In a statement to ABC News and the BBC, the FBI said only that "early this morning the FBI conducted an operation in the Los Angeles region related to an ongoing criminal investigation" and that it had no further comment. FBI sources told NBC Los Angeles that no arrests were expected at the property.

Cloobeck had backed Swalwell's campaign for California governor before withdrawing his support in April, after sexual misconduct allegations against Swalwell surfaced, NBC Los Angeles and the BBC reported. Swalwell does not live at the home but is believed to have stayed there for a time, sources told ABC News. Cloobeck's attorneys said he "was not home when the search warrant was executed and continues to have faith in the judicial process of this country," according to the BBC.

Swalwell, a Democrat, left the governor's race and gave up his House seat earlier this year after the allegations became public. In August, the FBI searched his Washington home and seized his electronic devices at San Francisco International Airport, NBC Los Angeles and the BBC reported. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said its sex crimes unit is weighing whether to bring charges in a case involving Swalwell, according to NBC Los Angeles.

Swalwell has denied wrongdoing and has never been criminally charged, the BBC reported. His attorney, Sara Azari, previously called the accusations "false, fabricated, and deeply offensive," according to the BBC.
