Dozens Rallied Outside an Insurance Company's Boston Headquarters to Demand the End of Its Mascot

It started as a joke on YouTube. Then people showed up with signs, megaphones and chants of "Liberty from Biberty."

BOSTON, Oct. 29, 2026 — It had the megaphones, the chants and the handmade signs of a real political rally. The cause was a fuzzy yellow puffball that sells car insurance.

Several dozen people gathered Sunday afternoon outside Liberty Mutual's headquarters on Berkeley Street in Back Bay to demand the company stop running ads with its mascot, Liberty Biberty, The Boston Globe reported. Signs read "Liberty from Biberty," and some showed the mascot crossed out.

The whole thing started as a joke. Connor Harvey, a 19-year-old YouTuber from Wilmot, N.H., posted a video on his channel aimed at the mascot and jokingly told people to protest at the company's offices. When that took off, he posted an "official announcement" that drew more than 600,000 views, then drove down with friends in matching "I HATE LIBERTY BIBERTY" sweatshirts. He said he did not expect so many people to show up.

"This is a revolution, this is the next Boston Tea Party," Harvey told the Globe. "We're done. It's over. We're getting rid of him, and we have to make our voices heard," he told WBZ NewsRadio. He also promised the rally would stay peaceful and said the group would leave if the company asked.

The crowd ran from young kids to middle-aged parents, and passing cars honked in support. One protester offered a theory of the case: the company "has discovered that if they make ads that are annoying and repetitive, that is a much more effective way to spread their message." One kid had a different review of the afternoon. "This has to be the most unemployed thing ever," he yelled.

According to WBZ, the rhyming mascot grew out of a 2019 blooper ad in which an actor flubbed the company's name. The new campaign launched this summer, and Harvey livestreamed the hourlong rally to a few hundred viewers.

Biberty did have one defender. Calvin Holmes showed up alone, dressed as the mascot, and held signs in its favor while the crowd jeered. "He's a beautiful freak," Holmes said, according to UPI.
