The Internet Counted LaMelo Ball's Steps. Then NBA Referees Confirmed It Was a Travel.
By The Arena Staff
MIAMI, Oct. 22, 2026 — It took the internet about one replay to decide LaMelo Ball traveled. On Thursday, the NBA referees' account on X agreed, counting four steps on a stepback 3-pointer that went uncalled, ESPN and CBS Sports reported.
The play came Wednesday night in Ball's debut with the Minnesota Timberwolves, a 131-106 win over the Miami Heat, according to ESPN and CBS Sports.
## The Play Everyone Rewound
On a stepback 3, Ball gathered the ball and kept stepping, and stepping, before he shot. No whistle came.
The ESPN broadcast crew caught it on the replay. Both CBS Sports and Awful Announcing reported that the announcers reacted on air, and a SportsCenter clip with the caption "That's a travel." spread quickly across social media.
Awful Announcing said Ball appeared to take at least four steps.
## The Referees Weigh In
Then came the official word. The NBA referees' account (@OfficialNBARefs) posted the clip with an explanation, according to ESPN and CBS Sports:
"For everyone asking, 'how is this legal?' It's not! He gathers with his right foot on the floor and would be permitted two steps by rule (left-right). He takes four steps after gathering the ball and travels."
CBS Sports noted that the account isn't known for joining in on the fun, which made the post stand out even more.
## What the Rule Says
The key word is "gather." That's the moment a player takes control of the ball, ending a dribble. After the gather, the rule allows two steps, as the referees' post explained.
So in this case, Ball gathered on his right foot. That meant he could step left, then right. Four steps is two too many.
## Even His Brother Noticed
The reaction wasn't limited to fans. Ball's brother, Lonzo Ball, also called it a travel online, ESPN and CBS Sports reported.
## No Harm Done
The missed call didn't change the result. Minnesota won by 25, and Ball finished with 21 points, according to ESPN and CBS Sports.
It was opening night, and the refs had plenty to watch. But if you're wondering whether your eyes were fooling you, the referees have now settled it: that was a travel.
