Charles Barkley Went 0-for-5 on "Who He Play For?" Then They Gave Him the Same Quiz Again

NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2026 — Charles Barkley has been failing "Who He Play For?" for years, and he's usually in on the joke. Thursday night's edition of "Inside the NBA" added a twist nobody had tried before. After Barkley missed all five players, the crew gave him the exact same quiz again, right away, with the answers still fresh. He got two.

The rules of the long-running segment are simple. Barkley is handed the names of five lesser-known active players and has to say which team each one plays for now. Sports Illustrated notes the bit was originally devised by TNT producers and came along when the crew moved to ESPN.

## Round One: 0-for-5

According to ClutchPoints, here is how the first round went:

- Moe Wagner: Barkley said the Charlotte Hornets. He's with the Brooklyn Nets.
- Buddy Hield: Barkley said the Milwaukee Bucks. He's with the Chicago Bulls.
- Taurean Prince: Barkley said the Memphis Grizzlies. He's with the Detroit Pistons.
- Mo Bamba: Barkley said the Indiana Pacers. He's with the Utah Jazz.
- Aaron Wiggins: Barkley said the Portland Trail Blazers. He's with the Atlanta Hawks.

There was also a bonus question on former player Garrett Temple. Barkley knew Temple was coaching but not where. He's on the Dallas Mavericks' staff, so SI scored the night 0-for-6. Along the way the panel offered helpful notes like "Almost, but the wrong conference."

Barkley had a defense ready. "I think the game is unfair to do it this early," he said, per SI. "'Cause I haven't seen any of these teams. We've only played three nights."

## Shaq's Idea

That is when Shaquille O'Neal turned to Kenny Smith. "Kenny, if we replay the game right now, how many would he get?"

Arizona Sports called the rerun unprecedented for the show. Barkley predicted he'd get four of five. Same players, same answers he had heard minutes earlier. He got two right, and at one point he moved Wiggins to the Pistons, ClutchPoints reported. "This is the greatest game of who he play for of all time," host Ernie Johnson said.

So they ran it a third time. Barkley finally placed Wagner with the Nets, Prince with the Pistons and Bamba with the Jazz, but missed Hield for the third straight time and missed Wiggins again, Arizona Sports reported. "We gave him the answers, and he still failed the test!" Smith said. One of the hosts told Barkley he had "zero retention."

His closing argument: "I got a lot going on, man."

## A Long Tradition

None of this is new territory for Barkley. SI recalls that he also went 0-for-6 in 2020, with Temple on that list too, and that he once guessed the New Jersey Nets, a team that hasn't existed under that name since 2012. During the 2011 lockout, asked about Aaron Brooks, he said, "He's either playing in China or Japan."

Part of why the bit works is that it's genuinely hard. There are more than 400 players on 30 rosters, and role players move constantly, so plenty of fans would struggle too. Barkley has been on "Inside the NBA" since 2000, and his willingness to laugh at himself is a big reason the segment keeps going viral.

Fans online were quick to call Thursday's version the best one yet. With three tries at a single five-question quiz, it's hard to argue.
