A 7-Week-Old Kitten Dodged Traffic on I-93. Rescuers Named Her Freeway.
A Good Samaritan pulled her out of I-93 traffic. Now she's in foster care, and the rescue says she's proof black cats aren't bad luck.
WOBURN, Mass., Oct. 23, 2026 — Interstate 93 north of Boston is a terrible place for a 7-week-old kitten. Last week one ended up dodging traffic there anyway, until a Good Samaritan pulled her to safety, Boston.com and the Boston Globe reported.
The tiny black kitten is now in the care of the Animal Rescue League of Boston, which announced the rescue Tuesday. Her name was the obvious choice: Freeway.
## Out of Traffic, Into Foster Care
The kitten was found in the northbound lanes of I-93 in Woburn, according to Boston.com. The rescue league hasn't released much about how the passerby managed to get her out of moving traffic, but she made it through and is now staying with a foster volunteer.
She'll stay in foster care until she's ready for adoption, Boston.com reported. The league says she isn't available yet. That makes sense for someone who's only seven weeks old and has already had a big week.
## A Black Cat With a Message
The timing was perfect for the rescue league. Freeway is a black cat, and it's almost Halloween.
"Some say black cats bring bad luck, but this little lady is proof that every superstition has it wrong," the Animal Rescue League of Boston wrote on Facebook, as quoted by Boston.com. "While Freeway isn't quite ready for adoption, maybe this is your sign to welcome another black cat into your family. Don't let superstitions haunt you."
Many shelters say black cats often wait longer for homes than other cats, and October is when many of them push hardest to change that. A kitten who survived an interstate makes a pretty strong case.
## How to Help
The league is pointing anyone who's interested in Freeway, or in the other animals in its care, to its adoption page at arlboston.org/adopt, Boston.com reported.
As a general safety rule, anyone who spots an animal on a highway should call police or animal control rather than run into traffic. Freeway's rescuer got lucky, and so did she.
