Police Say a Paramus Shoplifter Packed Three Suitcases With Clothes, Then His Getaway Driver Left Without Him
The chase ended in a brook.
PARAMUS, N.J., Oct. 25, 2026 — Every getaway plan needs a getaway car. Police in Paramus say this one drove off a little early.
Officers were called to the Marshalls on Route 17 South around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, after store workers saw a man stuffing clothes into a large rolling suitcase, NJ.com reported. "He then repeated this process two more times, ultimately filling three large rolling suitcases with stolen goods," Police Chief Robert Guidetti said.
A sergeant watching from inside the store saw the man wheel all three suitcases past the registers without paying, according to Daily Voice. As officers closed in on the entrance, he ditched the luggage and ran through the parking lot, hunched over and ducking between parked cars toward a green Dodge Charger with North Carolina plates.
The Charger left without him.
That left him on foot. An officer chased him across Route 17, behind a car dealership, down an embankment and into Sprout Brook, where the officer followed him in and made the arrest, police said.
Inside the abandoned suitcases, police counted 56 pieces of clothing worth $2,197.42.
Maki J. Davis, 22, of Brooklyn, was charged with organized retail theft, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and criminal trespass. NJ.com reported he was released from the Bergen County Jail the next day ahead of court hearings. Police didn't say whether they're looking for the driver.
